Alfred Snel - Founder of Sweelinck Music Education Netherlands
In 2002, Alfred Snel founded the Sweelinck Music Academy. He had already been teaching for 25 years and had extensive experience. He is a well-rounded musician. He studied not only piano but also orchestral conducting at the Royal Conservatory in The Hague. Teaching is in his blood. He teaches piano, orchestral conducting, and solfège, and also accompanies on piano. He coaches ensembles and gives lessons in preparation for the conservatory entrance exams. An umbrella name for all his lessons was more appropriate. It became the Sweelinck Music Academy..
What was striking was the number of questions asking whether he could also recommend a good teacher for other main subjects. That is why Alfred Snel decided to give colleagues the opportunity to present themselves on the Sweelinck Music Education website. This helped them to promote their practice through a comprehensive presentation. And on the other hand, anyone looking for a good teacher knew that the teachers on the website all had the necessary qualities. All teachers gave lessons in The Hague, the same region where Alfred Snel himself works.
In 2015, the time had come to expand even further. The region now encompassed the entire Netherlands. This led to the founding of Sweelinck Music Education Netherlands. And every teacher still receives a full page to provide a good impression of their teaching practice, along with other important information. The search engine makes it easier for those looking for a certified teacher to find them.
Alfred Snel has always continued to play himself, mainly as an accompanist for singers and instrumentalists. He is particularly interested in special productions. Kamermuziek – In the Picture was created especially for this purpose.

IIn 2020, Alfred Snel took the initiative to establish the Gelre Chamber Music Competition, a national annual competition for young musicians up to 27 years old who perform classical music as a duo, trio, or other ensemble, always without a conductor. The competition has quickly gained national recognition, with its headquarters in Nijmegen. There are already partnerships with Concertgebouw De Vereeniging in Nijmegen and the Grachtenfestival in Amsterdam. In January 2025, he stepped down as director and artistic director to devote more time to his teaching and his own concerts. Others continue their work for the Gelre Chamber Music Competition. www.kamermuziekconcoursgelre.nl
