Double bass lessons in Enschede
The double bass is the lowest string instrument in the symphony orchestra, but our beautiful instrument is also used in jazz, klezmer and light music. We play the bass with a bow or simply pluck the strings with our fingers.
Michel Kroese has been playing double bass in the Orkest van het Oosten symphony orchestra in Enschede for many years. He studied with Paul Godwaldt at the Brabant Conservatory in Tilburg.
In addition to my job as an orchestral musician, I play in a band called SymplyStrings. (www.symplystrings.nl) We are a quartet and play pop songs in a classical style.
I teach double bass at the Kaliber Kunstenschool music school and at Oyfo in Hengelo (O.).
The lessons take place at the Kaliber Art School in Enschede, Almelo, Oldenzaal or Wierden and at the Hengelo Music School, called OYFO, located there. I live in Enschede myself.
[X]Private double bass lessons last 30, 45 or 60 minutes, depending on the student’s wishes and the frequency of lessons. At the above-mentioned music schools, the standard lesson duration is 25 or 30 minutes per week. The frequency of lessons is determined in consultation, but beginner double bassists and/or children are advised to have lessons every week.
[X]The lessons are arranged in consultation with the pupils.. Usually in the afternoon or early evening.
[X]All information about the rates for private double bass lessons can be sent by email on request. The rates applicable at music schools can be found on the websites of these arts education institutions (www.kaliberkunstenschool.nl and www.oyfo.nl).
[X]Anyone aged 8 or older can start playing the double bass. If you are young, you will first start with a small double bass specially designed for children. We call this a ½ bass. It is not actually sawn in half, but is a smaller bass with a smaller fingerboard. This makes the distances for the left hand easier to reach for smaller hands. Adults, whether or not they have experience with another instrument, can also start on the “regular” double bass with a scale length of + 104 cm. We call this a 1/1 – a full-size double bass. There are also basses with a ¾ scale length.
[X]The double bass lessons are individual lessons. This allows you to learn calmly and thoroughly how to hold the bow and where to place your fingers on the fingerboard to produce a beautiful sound. In addition, you will of course quickly start playing together, for example in an orchestra or ensemble, because the double bass is a true ensemble instrument.
[X]The structure and content of the lessons are tailored entirely to the level, development, interests and any specific goals of the student. However, the double bass is a truly large and powerful instrument: it is not easy to learn, but once you have mastered the basic techniques, you can play some very beautiful (and varied) pieces.
