Preparing for the conservatory entrance exam

These lessons consist of a package of options that can be put together by the student according to their needs.

  • Solfège: sight singing, melodic and rhythmic dictation, and hearing and naming intervals and chords
  • General music theory: all knowledge of music theory required for the entrance examination
  • Piano accompaniment: in preparation for and, if desired, during the main subject examination of all instrumentalists and vocalists. As there is a second grand piano in the classroom, pianists can also prepare their piano concertos with orchestral accompaniment.
  • Coaching: advice on planning in the period leading up to the exam, help with organising concerts and guidance on overcoming exam nerves.
About the teacher

Alfred Snel studied at the Royal Conservatoire in The Hague. His main subjects were piano and orchestral conducting. His piano teachers were Léon Orthel, Jan de Man and the French pianist Janine Dacosta. After completing his studies, he devoted himself to accompanying vocalists and instrumentalists. He began teaching while still a student, and it soon became clear that this was his true calling. He has now been teaching for more than 25 years, and every day he manages to convey his enthusiasm for music to his students with enormous freshness.

He is registered in the Toonkunstenaars Register (ITR) and a member of the European Teachers Association (EPTA)

Structure and/or content of the lessons

During the initial meeting, we first assess what the student already knows and how good their hearing is. After that, a plan can be made. The date of the entrance examination naturally plays a role in this.

After that, the student will receive information about how the entrance examination for solfège and general music theory works, and how it is conducted at the conservatories.

The lessons are composed of a combination of general music theory and hearing tests. By immediately practising what has been learned in general music theory through hearing tests, the fastest progress is achieved.

The pupil is also given instructions on how to practise at home.
